What Specific Injuries Result from Taking PPI Drugs?

PPI side effects can be severe and cause serious injury and even death. Study after study shows how damaging PPI drugs can be. Common side effects include:

  • Kidney Disease & Renal Failure. Due to their ability to block the secretion of acid into the stomach, proton pump inhibitors may increase the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD), according to a January 2016 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. CKD treatment is costly – about $20,000 per year. End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) treatment costs even more – about $70,000 per year.
  • Bone fractures. The FDA reports an increased risk of breaks and fractures of the hip, wrist, and spine with high doses or long-term use of PPIs. Hip fractures are particularly devastating, both physically and financially – costing over $40,000 to treat.
  • Low magnesium levels. PPI use has been linked to low serum magnesium levels (hypomagnesemia), which, in the presence of inflammation, are associated with increased one-year mortality risk, according to a study published in Hemodialysis International

All of the above side effects are likely to result in lost time from work, expensive medical bills, and a great deal of pain. Additional side effects include both gastrointestinal and bacterial infections.

What Are the Most Common PPI Drugs?

We’ve all seen the television commercials for PPI drugs, although most of us would recognize the name of the drug and not know it was a PPI. In fact, millions of Americans have taken PPI drugs at some point, the most common being:

  • Nexium (esomeprazole magnesium), manufactured by AstraZeneca.
  • Prilosec (omeprazole), manufactured by AstraZeneca.
  • Prevacid (lansoprazole), manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
  • Aciphex (rabeprazole), manufactured by Eisai and Johnson & Johnson.
  • Protonix (pantoprazole), manufactured by Pfizer.
  • Zegerid (omeprazole / sodium bicarbonate), manufactured by Salix Pharmaceuticals.
  • Dexilant (dexlansoprazole), manufactured by Takeda Pharmaceuticals.
  • Vimovo (esomeprazole and naproxen), manufactured jointly by AstraZeneca and Horizon Pharmaceuticals.

What Are Proton Pump Inhibitors?

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly prescribed to treat various acid-peptic disorders including:

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).
  • Peptic ulcer disease.
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) induced gastropathy (dyspepsia, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting).

PPIs block acid buildup in the stomach. In theory, blocking this buildup prevents ulcers and allows any existing ulcers to heal.

Why Are Proton Pump Inhibitors Dangerous?

Numerous studies show that long-term use of PPI medications may cause problems with the body’s ability to absorb calcium, magnesium, and other vital nutrients.

Patients who take PPI drugs for an extended period of time (typically over one year) are at risk of suffering serious side effects including kidney disease, heart attack, bone fractures, stroke, dementia, severe infections, and more.

What Do PPI Injury Lawsuits Allege?

Although each of the above drugs is slightly different than the next, PPI injury lawsuits generally allege that manufacturers knew, or should have known, about the increased risk of serious injury or death.

Furthermore, they should have provided patients, the medical community, and the US Food & Drug Administration (FDA) with the proper warnings – which they failed to do. If you’ve been injured, call Citizens Law Firm to discuss your situation!
